Narrative
The mean stalk height (ground level to top visible dewlap, dewlaps form the hinge of the blade joint in sugarcane) of 10 CP 09-1952 stalks was 276 cm. The mean internode length of 10 CP 09-1952 stalks at the fifth internode from the ground was 17.2 cm. Stalk diameter was measured at the middle of the second (26.4 mm), fifth (24.7 mm), and tenth (22.5 mm) internodes from the ground as well as at the middle of the hardened internode closest to the top visible dewlap (20.7 mm). CP 09-1952 exhibited a cylindrical shaped internode and a growth ring with a mean width of 3.7 mm at the fifth internode from the ground. The root band of CP 09-1952 was 5.3 mm wide. Bud furrows were shallow and extended up to one-third the length of the internode from the bud. The buds of CP 09-1952 were yellow (5Y8/6). Buds of CP 09-1952 were lightly raised above the surface of the root band and had shapes described as ovate bud with emarginate basal wing region at the fifth internode from the ground. The bud length and width means of the fifth bud from the bottom from five stalks of CP 09-1952 were 7.5 and 5.7 mm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was light to none for CP 09-1952. The buds of CP 09-1952 had light pubescence with hair around the edge of the bud. CP 09-1952 is resistant to smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow & P. Sydow) and Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), and moderately resistant to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler),leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), Sugarcane yellow leaf virus, and ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.). It is moderately susceptible to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow). In addition, CP 09-1952 tested negative for the presence of the Bru1 gene which confers resistance to brown rust.

Description:
Parents of CP 09-1952 were the two CP sugarcane breeding lines CP 01-2390 (female) and Poly 06-30 (male). Grandparents on the female side were CP 95-2318 and CP 94-1528, and on the male side were unknown as the male could be any of the 15 varieties in the polycross. Known great grandparents on the female side were CP 72-2086, CP 87-1628, and US 90-1090. Great great grandparents on the female side included CP 62-374, CP 63-588, CP 69-1052, CP 79-1374, and US 87-1002. There was one commercial cultivar among its great grandparents: CP 72-2086 that was released for commercial production in Florida and it was widely grown in Florida and many Latin American countries. Of these ancestral cultivars, CP 72-2086 was the most widely grown sugarcane cultivar in Florida in 1994.
