Description:
At the Rodale Research Center (donor institute), RRC 39, included two species that were later separated into two accessions, in Ames Iowa in 2018. The Amaranthus hybridus part is Ames 1990, and the Amaranthuys tricolor part is Ames 34159. The Rodale Research Center field book #7 from 1978 (at the NCRPIS Ames, Iowa) describes a field planting of RRC 39 near Kutztown, Pennsylvania, USA. The plants, Amaranthus tricolor, had no flowers in that environment, and did not set seed, but an off-type weed Amaranthus hybridus set seeds was harvested, and was then maintained as RRC 39, and donated in 1981. In 1990 seeds of the original A. tricolor were donated by the RRC and in 2014 germinated well. The 2014 harvest and the seeds received in 1990 were segregated as Ames 34159. Both of the parts of RRC 39 are unlike PI 480489 (which has the same IC number) as seen in a grow-out in 2014.
