Selection criteria! for F2 and subsequent lines at the Malheur Experiment Station (MES) included high yield, low lodging, zero shatter, shorter plant height and maturity in the available growing season. The breeder, Dr. Clint Shock, specifically chose seed lines with clear hilum so that off colors would not contaminate possible food products. Light seed coat and color was also selected to allow the widest possible food product use. In 1992, 241 single plants were selected from 5 F5 lines. Seed from these selctions was planted and evaluated in 1993; 18 F6 sectloris were found promising and selcted for further testing in larger plots from 1994 through 1999. Through these years of breedllng and selection, Dr. Shock successfully reduced plant height, reduced shatter. reduced plant lodging and increased yellds. Of the 18 lines, 8 were selected for further testing that included M92-085. Owyhee1 has a maturity of approximately 0.5. In 2000, further sel􀉙ctions from six of the 1992 MES lines and from OR-6 werer made to refine phenotype. Owyhee1 is one of the resultant lines from this last series of selections.

M. Seddlgh aod G.D. Jolliff at OSU, Identified a soybean germplasm that would fill pods when subjected to cool night temperatures. This germplasm was crossed at Corvallis with productfve Jines to produce 'OR61 and 'OR8', arnoung others, At this point, the development moved to Ontario, Oregon. At the request of Dr. Clint Shock, these two lines were crossed with early maturing hlgh-yleldlng semi-dwarf Una by R.L. Cooper (USDA, ARS) to produce semi-dwarf lines with potential adaptation to the PNW.
