AM Drove up to the top of the Mengkun Stone mountain to just over 6,000. Interesting blend of Cornus hongkongensis, Clethra, Illicium, Callicarpa, Hydrangea xanthoneura and H. anomala, Ilex championii, Schima remotiserrata, Magnolia, Rhododendron, growing through low bamboo. This is the highest point in Hunan Province. Collected down the road until noon, finding another Clematis, deciduous. After lunch, went down the valley to climb up into Monkey King Valley; beautiful walk up with Magnolia moto, Machilus thunbergii, an evergreen Hydrangea, a superb narrow foliaged form of Pileostegia viburnoides, Epimediums, Begonia and most notably Mahonia shenii. Again brilliant weather if not a bit warm. [It isn't entirely clear from the notes which set of associated taxa might belong with this collection. -SBL];
