Environment description: Open, swampy areas.
Associated species: Acer rubrum; Pinus palustris; Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium; Nyssa sylvatica; Sarracenia flava; Osmundastrum cinnamomeum
Comment: DESCRIPTION: These were shrubby plants with many stems originating at ground level and are referable to the illegitimate taxon M. virginiana "var. pumila".; SUB-COUNTRY GEO 2: Charleston County; COLLECTOR'S NUMBER: 08MV48; MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT WILD COLLECTION: Seeds collected from 150 plants. The multistemmed nature of the plants appears to be controlled by the frequent fires in the region as indicated by scarred pine trunks and presence of obligate pyrophytes. Plants from this region are worthy of further observation and may represent distinct phenotypes.;
