Comment: DESCRIPTION: Tall flowering stems to 3, no foliage.; SUB-COUNTRY GEO 2: Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture; COLLECTOR'S NUMBER: HJM14243; MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT WILD COLLECTION: Pouring rain upon waking and considerable ambivalence regarding driving out to seek Acer griseum which was our target species. 2.5 hours after leaving, we arrived at a small forestry station and then led to a small farm where an Acer griseum had been transplanted from the wild. This turned out to be a cutback and dying Stewartia as well as two cutback but surviving Acer flabellatums. Now above 5,000 Donglin explained we were looking for a three leafleted brown foliaged tree and he said he knew. Within a half hour ride, we were at the base of an undisturbed hill rising above a cabbage field and we climbed through the rain, Miscanthus, Rubus to arrive indeed to a beautiful specimen of Acer griseum. We noted another specimen 200 feet above and Scott and I climbed to look at it. All specimens growing atop rocks. Seed were very apparent on this specimen and we set about collecting from the ground. Scott returned to the car to retrieve his collecting pole and we proceeded to remove existing seed from the tree. There appeared to be no regeneration of this species in the vicinity. I cut open a single seed and there existed a viable embryo.;
