Narrative
PSH09TX15 possesses several traits atypical of Johnsongrass and characteristics of annual sorghum (sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench): >2.25 meter canopy/top leave height, >24 exerted leaes per tiller, and >24" leaf lengths. While producing rhizomes similar to Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.), those of PSH09TX15 are not as highly spreading in general. PSH09TX15 to be tetraploid (2n=4x=40), similar to Johsnongrass and double that of annual sorghum. A survey of 340 EST-SSRs, however, confirmed PSH09TX15 to be a sorghum spp./ hybrid via its possession of numberous DNA markers that are specific to annual sorghum and absent in Johnsongrass.

sph09tx15 is a wild Sorghum spp. hybrid collected vegetatively on 11/17/2009 (R. Jessup) within a population of Johnsongrass along the median of Highway 21 in Burleson county, TX. PSH09TX15 was subsequently confirmed to be a natural S. bicolor x S. halepense interspecific hybrid.
