Narrative
The RTx430/GGL recombinant inbred mapping population was developed from a cross between RTx430, an excellent pollinator line and cold tolerant selection PI ~J07:Z.Jknown as "Gaigaoliang" (GGL). The RTx430 x GGL recombinant inbred mapping population was derived thru single seed descent from F2 to F6 generation and was bulked from 10 plants per inbred lines from F7 and succeeding generations. A recombinant inbred population as is the case for RTx430/GGL is a permanent germplasm resource that harbors >90% homozygosity in majority of its loci. The advanced generations of RILs can maintain such homozygosity in majority of its loci in as many generations in the future provided that careful self-pollination through bagging is perfonned at anthesis. The population consisting of 158 F7 to F8 RI lines was utilized for genetic analysis of early season cold tolerance using quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis. The parents (RTx430 and GGL) and RILs exhibited diverse phenotypes for both % field emergence and cold germination under controlled conditions and field conditions. Additional variation for traits including waxy endosperm, maturity and plant height were observed from this recombinant inbred mapping population. The RILs from the RTx430/GGL population do not express pigmented testa, a trait associated with high seed tannin content and which is an important trait of concern in sorghum grain production. The RTx430/GGL population is an important resource to overcome the possible linkage between pigmented testa and cold tolerance in sorghum.
