Narrative
CP 07-2137 was released in September 2014 for sandy soils in Florida due to its high yields and moderate to high resistance against most of the important sugarcane diseases. Sugarcane tonnage or biomass yield is very important on sandy soil because of nutrient and water stress. Biomass yield in CP 07-2137 was significantly greater than the check, CP 78-1628 (Tai et al., 1991) in plant cane as well as ratoon crops. CP 07-2137 has excellent ratooning ability, which is very important for sand cultivars. CP 07-2137 also has a high sucrose yield, economic index, and resistance against orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E. J. Butler) and leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), and moderate resistance against brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Sydow) even in the absence of the brown rust resistant ‘Bru 1’ gene. CP 07-2137 is also moderately resistant to ratoon stunting disease (RSD) (caused by Clavibacter xyli subsp. Xyli Davis) in Florida. CP 07-2137 showed smut susceptibility, but most of this smut was spotted at one location and the infection through artificial inoculation was still lower than the susceptible check, CP 78-1628. CP 07-2137 has shown moderate to low freeze tolerance in terms of sugar degradation following a freeze in tests at the Hague Farm near Gainesville in plantcane in 2012-2013 and in first ratoon cane in 2013-2014.
