Narrative

"Boyero UNNE" is a tetraploid highly apomitic F1 hybrid between an experimentally obtained female parent, reproducing manly by sexuality, and an apomictic wild genotype of bahiagrass. It is the first registered cultivar of tetraploid apomictic Paspalum notatum Flüggé that was developed by breeding through a sexual × apomictic hybridization scheme, exploiting apomixis and plant selection in the F1 progeny. The new cultivar has a more upright growing habit than all tetraploid bahiagrass cultivars currently in use, or than wild tetraploid biotypes. It is characterized by ascending to erect stems, up to 0.9 m tall at flowering; inflorescences of two long racemes, 10-18 cm long, with a mean of 100 spikelets per raceme; spikelets 3.5 mm long, 2.5 mm wide; fruit caryopsis, ovoid, approximately 2 mm long, 1.5 mm wide. There are approximately 300000 seeds (mature spikelets with caryopses) per kilogram. Boyero UNNE is resistant to the different species of spittlebugs (Hemipthera, Cercopidae) that usually attack some tropical grass species. It is usually free of the pest fungus Claviceps paspali, though the fungus may develop on the spikelets at the end of the flowering period, when conditions are more suitable for fungus attack. The probable adaptation and use of Boyero UNNE extents from humid tropical to temperate latitudes, mainly in subtropical regions, from sea level to 2000 meters.
