Narrative
NDSUEarlyGEM21 b is a unique maize synthetic variety created at NDSU for breeding programs developing short-season Stiff Stalk (SS) inbred lines. This new variety was developed by recombining 9 BC1 :S1 elite inbred lines giving top hybrid performance with industry testers across North Dakota environments. Late temperate germplasm was brought from Argentina to the central U.S. Corn Belt through the USDA-GEM program and then adapted to the northern U.S. through backcrossing with ND2000 elite short-season lines through the NDSUEarlyGEM program. New short-season inbred lines have been developed to increase the genetic diversity of U.S. northern hybrids. This variety has brought new genes for high extractable starch and starch content in ethanol utilization.
