Narrative
A novel sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench x S. propinquum (Kunth) Hitchc.] F6 recombinant inbred line (`PSSH12TX09?) was identified that successfully overwintered across plant hardiness zones 8a, 8b, and 9a between 2013 and 2015. Prior development from the initial interspecific hybridization through the F3 was conducted at the USDA-ARS Southern Plains Area Research Center, College Station, TX, whereas advancement to the F6 was a collaborative effort between Texas AandM University (TAMU), TAMU Agrilife Research, and the USDA-ARS. Overwintering perenniality of PSSH12TX09 exceeded 90% at all # locations across both evaluation years, with no significant differences across locations. PSSH12TX09 has significantly larger plant height (?60 cm), greater days to anthesis (?16 d), and smaller seed size (-66 %) than the well documented sorghum inbred line, BTx623. As a highly overwintering genotype, PSSH12TX09 may serve as a novel resource to further dissect mechanisms of perennialism as well as develop non-invasiVe, perennial sorghum germplasm suitable for utilization as grain, forage, and biofuel feedstocks.
