Narrative
The mean stalk height (ground level to top visible dewlap, dewlaps form the hinge of the blade joint in sugarcane) of 10 CP 06-2042 stalks was 354.6 cm. The mean internode length of 10 CP 06-2042 stalks at the fifth internode from the ground was 20.4 cm. Stalk diameter was measured at the middle of the second (29.6 mm), fifth (28.0 mm), and tenth (25.2 mm) internodes from the ground as well as at the middle of the hardened internode closest to the top visible dewlap (22.8 mm). CP 06-2042 exhibited a cylindrical shaped internode and a growth ring with a mean width of 3.0 mm at the fifth internode from the ground. The root band of CP 06-2042 was 8.5 mm wide. Bud furrows were mostly absent but occasionally short and shallow for CP 06-2042. The buds of CP 06-2042 were yellow (2.5Y7/6). Buds of CP 06-2042 were raised above the surface of the root band and had shapes described as round with central germpore at the fifth internode from the ground. The bud length and width means of the fifth bud from the bottom from five stalks of CP 06-2042 were 8.0 and 7.8 mm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was very sparse and extended longitudinally down the center for CP 06-2042. The buds of CP 06-2042 had sparse pubescence with hair at the apex. CP 06-2042 is moderately resistant to smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow and P. Sydow), moderately susceptible to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), and moderately resistant to Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic). It is resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Sydow), moderately suisceptible to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), moderately susceptible to ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.), and CP 06-2042 is susceptible to Sugarcane yellow leaf virus. In addition, CP 06-2042 tested negative for the presence of the Bru1 gene which confers resistance to brown rust.

Clones in the polycross that could be the male parent are CP84-1198, CP89-2377, CP95-1913, CP96-1709, CP96-1953, CP97-1387, CP97-2068, CP98-1837, CP98-1840, Ho98-784, HoCP92-618, HoCP99-825, HoCP99-854, TCP90-4087, TCP93-4245, TCP97-4424, and TCP98-4464. Known grandparents on the female side were CP90-1533 and CP84-1198. Known great grandparents on the female side were NG57-252, CP70-1133, and CP72-2086. Of the grandparents and great grandparents, CP70-1133 and CP72-2086 were the best cultivars in Florida in 1980-1990s.
