Narrative
Cold tolerance at planting and seedling vigor for stand establishment are critical traits needed to boost sorghum production. To support these needs BTx623 x PI567946 (HKZ) recombinant inbred population was developed. BTx623 x PI567946 (HKZ) RI population is composed of226 Fr F8 RI lines, which combines and provides variation for enhanced field emergence and seedling vigor at lower soil and ambient air temperature. Field emergence and vigor for this population were evaluated in 3 locations in 2011. Additionally, this population offers genetic variation for plant height, days to flowering and seed quality parameters including phenolics and sugar composition at seedling stage. The population also harbors genetic variation based on response to P hytium aphanidermatum (an important seedling pathogen of sorghum) at seedling stage.

Description:
BTx623 x PI567946 (HKZ) recombinant inbred population, was developed by single seed descent breeding technique from F2 to F5 generations. Seeds were bulked from 10 representative unform plants at F6 generation and advanced by selfing to F7 generation. Two of 226 RI lines were selfed up to F8generation. An Excel file listing the detailed pedigree of each recombinant inbred line is provided. BTx623 (USDA-ARS GRIN PI 564163), is a white seeded elite line with a pedigree ofBTx3197xSC170-6-4. BTx623 was developed by Dr. Fred Miller at Texas A& M University and released in 1976.
