Narrative
Tift 125 is a perennial at Tifton, GA (USDA zone 8b). It was significantly taller than Vertigo? in five of five tests in Tifton and Blairsville. Plant canopy diameter was significantly wider for Tift 125 than Vertigo? in four of five tests in GA. Tift 125 has an attractive reddish/purple color and had significantly better color in one of three tests in Tifton and one of two tests at Blairsville. Tift 125 was equal in color to Vertigo? in one test at Blairsville and in two tests at Tifton. We consider a rating of at least 7 an acceptable color. Helminthosporium leaf spot is known to affect some genotypes in this species but, this disease has not been observed at Tifton or Blairsville, GA on Tift 125. Leaves of Tift 125 are significantly longer and wider than those of Vertigo?. Culm-leaf angle was narrower for Tift 125 than for Vertigo?. Leaf area was greater for Tift 125 compared to Vertigo?. Tift 125 is pollen and seed sterile. No pollen or seed has been observed on plants flowering in the greenhouse during the winter (short days). Tift 125 survived -6 ?C for one night and 21 nights below 0 ?C in the field during the 2009-10 winter at Tifton. It also survived -7 OC for one night and 24 nights below 0? C in the field during the 2010-11 winter at Tifton. It has not survived the winter temperatures at Blairsville, GA.

Description:
In 2003, red tetraploid (2n = 4x = 28) pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum, 04-94) was crossed with SC 1125-2 [a Merkeron napiergrass (P. purpureum, 2n = 4x = 28) x PS 262 (P. squamulatum, 2n=Bx= 56) interspecific hybrid]. One vigorous plant (04-26-1) was selected in 2004. In 2004, 'Princess' napiergrass (2n = 4x = 28) was pollinated with 04-26-1. 06-125 was the 125th plant selected in 2006 from the 2004 cross. It has been tested as 06-125 or simply as 125 or Tift 125 since 2007.
