Narrative
Syn1 represents a wide, rough leafed tall fescue which is dark green in appearance that segregates for varying levels of rust tolerance. Syn1 possesses a Lolium multiflorum cytoplasm and is free of the toxic endophyte Neotyphodium coenephialum which has been identified as the cause of a fescue toxicosis syndrome somteimes suffered by livestock that graze the N. coenophialum-infected grass. This toxicity can lead to poor weight gain, elevated body temperature, reduced conception rates, agalactia, rough hair coat, fat necrosis, loss of switch and ear tips, and lameness or dry gangrene of the feet. Syn1 exhibits exceptional tolerance to heat, drought and low nitrogen inputs. The Syn1 material represents a useful forage for graxing livestock in dryland areas of the southern plains region of the USA.

Description:
Syn1 was develeoped by combining eight dihaploid lines generated through a gamete selection breeding strategy (Plant Patent 8,618,353) performed at teh USDA-ARS, Grazinglands Research Laboratory, El Reno, OK. The dihaploid products generated from gamete selection were allowed to recombine for one generation.
