Narrative
NUF-76' St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze] is suitable for use as a turfgrass in lawns and landscapes in the southern United States. It is resistant to southern chinch bug (Blissus insularis Barber) biotypes in Florida and North Carolina, is the first diploid (2n = 2x =18) cultivar possessing resistance to the most damaging insect pest of St. Augustinegrass, and is currently the only commercially available resistant St. Augustinegrass cultivar. It is also resistant to certain races of the fungal disease gray leaf spot, caused by Pyricularia grisea, and the planthopper (Liburnia pseudoseminigra Muir and Gifford). NUF-76 has short fine textured leaves relative to other St. Augustinegrasses. NUF-76 has a significantly slower leaf extension rate compared to 'Floratam' and thus requires fewer mowings, reducing maintenance inputs. It produces a dense, high quality turfgrass.

Description:
The cross was FL-1997-57 (female) X 6-72-90-36 (male). The cross was made in 1982 in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida. The hybrid plant that was later released as NUF-76 was first labeled as FL-1997-108. FL-1997-108 was tested in multiple locations for multiple years for southern chinch bug resistance, turfgrass quality, and adaptation. NUF-76 was released as a cultivar in 2007.
