Narrative
The original Ki14 ? B73 (KB) RILs were used for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with host-resistance to southern corn leaf blight (SCLB), gray leaf spot (GLS), and northern corn leaf blight (NCLB). Three traits associated with maturity?days to anthesis, days to silking, and anther silk interval and two morphological traits?plant and ear height, were also mapped. A high level of variation for all of these traits was observed in the population. Transgressive segregants were identified for all traits except host resistance to SCLB. The genetic marker data included 765 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 74 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. RILs were genotyped and a genetic map was created. The high level of host resistance of Ki14 and the B73 Stiff-Stalk Synthetic (BSSS) genetic background will likely invite use of the mapping population as a germplasm resource in temperate areas. The yield potential of B73 and the tropical maize background are likely to generate interest in tropical and sub-tropical areas. Distribution of the RIL mapping population will allow public access to this resource for continued mapping, gene discovery, and plant breeding. The KB RIL immortalized mapping population has been provided to the Maize Genetics Cooperation Stock Center for distribution to maize researchers without restriction. The mapping population is registered as Z042 Ki14 x B73 RILs:http://www.maizegdb.org/cgi-bin/displaystockrecord.cgi?id=9025066. The stock center will provide a small amount (10 - 20 kernels) for each genetic stock requested with the understanding that the requestor will increase the stocks of interest. The map and associated genotypic data are publicly available in a previously published paper (Coles et al. 2010). Reference: Coles, N. D., M.D. McMullen, P.J. Balint-Kurti, R.C. Pratt and J.B.
