Description:
A composite of landrace accessions attributed to the race Tuson formed the original population. The five accessions used to form the composite were obtained from M. Goodman at North Carolina State University. BA III (PI 449556) and PE 011 (PI 583912) were collected from Brazil. Cuba 67 (NSL 283507) was collected from Cuba. Two accessions are tentatively identified as Tuson Cubano (PI 487940) from Ecuador and (GUAT 209) PI 498583 from Guatemala. Following formation of this composite, 11 cycles of mass selection for earliness, plant height, ear height, lodging resistance, and the abscense of Ustalago maydis (common smut) were applied. Finally, 1 cycle of S1 selection occurred.
