CPCL 05-1201 had an average height of 3.2 m in the experimental plots (height was measured from ground level to top visible dewlap; dewlaps form the hinge of the blade joint in sugarcane) and an average diameter of 23 mm. The internode of CPCL 05-1201 was 15 cm long on average with a cylindrical shape and a light wax layer. Growth rings and root bands on the stalks of CPCL 05-1201 were respectively 3.5 mm and 7 mm in size. The color of the stalks of CPCL 05-1201 was characterized of a shade (2.5 GY 7/6) of green-yellow, in accordance with the Munsell Color Charts for Plant Tissues. The buds were raised on the stalks of CPCL 05-1201, narrow ovate in shape, accompanied with few (bud) furrows. Leaf sheaths adhere loosely on the stalks of CPCL 05-1201, with dense pubescence, with long and lanceolate auricles, and with crescent ligules. CPCL 05-1201 is resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Sydow), orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), to mosaic (caused by the strain E Sugarcane mosaic virus), and to eyespot (caused by Bipolaris sacchari), to smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow and P. Sydow), to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), and to ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.). CPCL 05-1201 is susceptible to the Sugarcane yellow leaf virus. CPCL 05-1201 tested positive for the presence of the Bru1 gene that confers resistance to brown rust in sugarcane. CPCL 05-1201 was recommended for planting on organic soils in Florida where it outperformed its competitors by 7-10% in sucrose yield and by 9-13% in profitability. CPCL 05-1201 was also recommended for planting on sand soils where it is expected to be 24-29% more profitable than either CP 89-2143 or CP 78-1628. No significant yield decline was observed with CPCL 05-1201 when tested under the successive cropping system used in Florida. CPCL 05-1201 has good tolerance to mild and severe freeze conditions in the field.

Description:
CPCL 05-1201 was derived from a cross made between sugarcane varieties CL 87-2882 used as the female parent and variety CL 93-2679 used the male parent. The parents were advanced lines that were not released for commercial production. The CL varieties were developed by US Sugar Corporation (USSC), a private company established in Clewiston, FL. CPCL 05-1201 has, in its pedigree, three grandparents (two from the female and one from the male sides) that were important commercial (USSC proprietary) cultivars in Florida. Grandparents on the female side were CP 87-1475 and CP 85-1308; on the male side, the grandparents were CP 52-68 and CP 72-2086. As great grandparents of CPCL 05-1201, `CL 61-0620? and CP 70-1133 were two major cultivars in the Florida industry that contributed genes to the female and male parents, respectively.
