Narrative
SD06-418 was derived from a cross of SDX98-76192 x N98-4445A, relative maturity (RM) 1.2. The cross was made in the summer of 2002, and the progeny was advanced to F4 generation by single pod descent the summer of 2005. In 2006, F5 progeny rows from segregating population were selected. Subsequently, these lines were yield tested in 2007 (F6) in multiple locations. The experimental line SD06-418, selected from these lines, was evaluated in the regional test in 2008 and 2009. Re-selection and further purification were performed during 2010-2011. It was then evaluated in regional quality tests, uniform tests and South Dakota Crop Performance Test 2012 and 2013. At 13% moister, its oil content averaged 19.2% in regional quality tests 2012 and 2013 (12 year-locations), 18.9% in regional uniform tests 2012 and 2013 (14 year-locations), and 19.3% in SD CPT 2012 and 2013 (4 year-locations), higher than check cultivars and other lines (averaged 18.5%). In most cases, it also exhibited good protein content and protein meal comparable to check cultivars (Surge, Sheyenne and MN1401). SD06-418 yielded 36.9 bu/a in regional quality tests 2012 and 2013 (22 year-locations), lower than Surge and Sheyenne. In regional uniform tests 2012 and 2013 (14 year-locations), it averaged 50.7 bu/a, similar to Surge and Sheyenne, and its oil yield (oil production per acre) was still higher than Surge and Sheyenne. In CPT (4 year-locations), its yield averaged 41.5 bu/a, lower than Surge and Codington. Compared with its sister line SD06-415, SD06-418 has similar overall performance and resistance to Phytophthora rot, but is slightly lower in both oil and yield in most cases, taller in plant height and lower in lodging tolerance, smaller in seed size (100-seed weight), but one day earlier in maturity.
