Narrative
CMS GIG2 has the genotype of rf4rf4Rvrv with normal plant vigor, but segregates one normal to one reduced vigor plant after backcrossing with HA89. CMS GIG2 is maintained by backcrossing with inbred line HA 89. CMS GIG2 produced no seed after self-pollination and 95?k and 94?/o seed set, respectively, under open-pollination and backcrossing with HA89, indicating complete male-sterility and normal female fertility. CMS GIG2 is single-headed, with a plant height of 99 cm, flowering 76 days after planting, head diameter of 13.4 em and 1 000-seed weight of 57.1 grams, and black seed with grey stripes. In comparison, CMS HA 89 is single-headed with a plant height, days to flowering, head diameter, 1 000-seed weight, and seed color of 120.3 cm, 71 days, 15.4 cm, 72.4 grams, and black seed with grey stripes, respectively.

CMS GIG2 originated from a single male-sterile plant among progenies of wild H. giganteus L. accessions 1934 (PI 503250) crossed with HA 89. is BC6F3 bulks with the pedigree of H. giganteus/7*HA 89/3/H. giganteus/6* HA 89//H. maximiliani 1631 (amphiploid). BC6F3. All plants from BC1 to BC6 of H. giganteus/HA 89 were male-sterile. indicating the existence of male-sterile cytoplasm in H. giganteus 1934. designated as CMS GIG2. CMS GIG2 has the genotype of rf4rf4Rvrv with normal plant vigor.
