Narrative
ER-1 Chason represents a broad based germplasm selected specifically for tolerance to stress and competitive forage performance in central OK. It represents a new cereal ryegrass resource selected specifically for the poor soil, drought and high heat conditions of OK. Multi-year trials at Lane, OK, El Reno, OK, Mound Valley, KS and McPhearson, KS demonstrate its competitive qualities and adaptation to the environmental extremes of the region. It is competitive with standard checks of Maton, Elbon and Oklon rye. ER1-Chason is slightly later flowering germplasm, being approximately four days later to flower than Maton and Elbon cultivars. Seed is maintained by the USA-ARS and 200 seed quantities will be provided upon request.

Description:
Seed of ER1-Chason was initially obtained from the farmstead of Mr. Charles Chason, north of Woodward, OK where it had been grown, harvested and reseeded for over 40 years on rolling hills consisting entirely of blow sand. Phenotypic and superior seed weight selections were performed on fifty open-pollinated individuals in El Reno, OK in 1999.
