Narrative
Powderhorn great northern bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), developed by Michigan State University AgBioResearch, and was released in 2013 as a new high-yielding edible dry bean cultivar suitable for direct harvest. Powderhorn was developed using pedigree selection to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease, agronomic and quality traits. In 5-yr of field trials, Powderhorn yielded 3044 kg ha-1, flowered in 42 d and matured in 95 d. Plants averaged 50 cm in height, with lodging resistance score of 1.7 and seed size of 37 g 100 seed-1. Powderhorn combines high yield potential with erect architecture with midseason maturity in great northern seed type. Powderhorn has resistance to lodging, high pod placement within plant structure making it suitable for direct harvest under narrow row production systems. The upright architecture also contributes to avoidance of white mold. Powderhorn is most similar to Matterhorn great northern cultivar but possesses higher levels of resistance to white mold and has out yielded Matterhorn by 9% over 5 years. Both cultivars are resistant to bean common mosaic virus; Powderhorn possesses the I gene. Powderhorn has acceptable canning quality equivalent to Matterhorn.

Description:
Powderhorn great northern bean breeding line was developed from the cross of two MSU great northern bean breeding lines: G04514/Matterhorn. Original cross number 05G214 was made in the greenhouse in E. Lansing, MI in 2005. MSU breeding line G04514 is an upright great northern that was derived from 3-way cross of G99750//Matterhorn/N00904 made to introduce white mold tolerance from navy line N00904 into the great northern seed type. Matterhorn is high-yielding, mid-season, upright great northern variety that is susceptible to white mold.
