Narrative
AN38 intermediate triticale, originated from the cross between L T1 071.82 (winter habit) x Vicuna 4 (spring habit) by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Int), Mexico, D.F., was selected and released as a forage cultivar in Mexico by the Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro at Coahuila State in 2012 (Reg. no. 2833-TCL-016-231112/C). Triticale AN38 is a complete hexaploid intermediate genotype: is a medium tall (95-130 cm), medium maturity triticale. It has a long, fully awned, cream colored, dense, and medium lax spikes. Its kernels are medium dark in color. AN38 triticale was evaluated in advanced forage yield trials under 15 environments of northern Mexico from 1996-1997 until 2000-2001 fall-winter cycles across two cuts, and again from 2007-2008 until 2012 fall-winter cycles under 11 environments across three cuts (total 26 environments). In average of all environments, triticale AN38 yielded 10,009 kg/ha of accumulated dry forage. The average crude protein content (CP) of AN38 was 23.9, 23.4 and 20.2% at the first, second and third cut, respectively. Also, triticale AN38 registered an relative value forage (RVF) of 136, 117 and 109 at the first, second and third cut, respectively. At present, AN38 begins to be used by farmers of northern states of Mexico, mainly for hay for dairy cows and grazing by yearling steers and heifers.
