Germplasm '509-45-1' is a small-fruited Capsicum annuum. Plant and fruit characteristics of '509-45-1' are very similar to the plant and fruit characteristics of PI 645509. However, in contrast to fruit of PI 645509 which are quite pungent, fruit of 509-45-1 are not pungent and contain high concentrations of capsinoids (capsiate and dihydrocapsiate). Plants of '509-45-1' are strongly branched and can reach a height of 80 cm in the field. Fruit are scattered throughout the plant. Fruits are produced continuously from mid-season until first frost - individual plants oftentimes producing many hundreds of fruit over the growing season. A typical '509-45-1' fruit is approximately 28 mm in length, 0.8 cm in diameter, trapezoidal in shape (longitudinal section), round in cross-section and weighs ~0.6 g. Immature fruit are a medium green color. Mature fruit are a dark red. Immature green fruit of '509-45-1' can be expected to contain >500 ug/g FW total capsinoids.

Description:
Germplasm '509-45-1' was derived from a single plant originally selected from PI 645509 during a germplasm screening for the occurrence of pungency. Fruit from a single plant of 645509 was found to be non-pungent and subsequently designated '509'. Fruit of '509' were found to lack capsaicinoids but produced moderate levels of capsinoids (capsiate and dihydrocapsiate). Further single plant selections for capsinoids were made from the selfed progeny of '509' in successive generations resulting in germplasm '509-45-1'
