Narrative
'Patriot' is a main-season, determinate (sp), crimson (ogc), root-knot nematode-resistant (Mi) cultivar with good fruit-setting ability. It has slightly oblate, green-shouldered fruits; average weight per fruit is 150 g. Crack resistance, color, internal qualities, and smoothness of fruit are above average. 'Patriot' is resistant to Fusarium wilt (race 1) and gray leaf spot, and it has field tolerance to early blight. It is comparable to 'Homestead' and 'Walter' in soluble solids. In tests, the pH averaged 4.28 for greenhouse-grown and 4.37 for field-grown fruit. Vitamin C content was equal to or better than that of 'Homestead', 'Walter', and 'Florida MH-1'. Vitamin A content was not significantly different from that of 'Walter'. 'Patriot' is intended be used in gardens or other production areas where the southern root-knot nematode [Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White)] or the tropical root-knot nematode [M. javanica (Treub)] is a problem.

Description:
'Patriot' is an F10 selection from a cross between Purdue 68-119-1 (a determinate crimson ogc ogc) and S5A1 (a breeding line derived from 'Atkinson' x 'Supermarket' backcrossed 5 times to the latter). Early generations were screened for disease and root-knot nematode resistance, and later generations were selected for horticultural characteristics. Selections were advanced by single-plant, mass and bulk breeding methods. The F10 generation was tested for resistance to root knot nematodes and fusarium wilt (race 1).
