Narrative
Brookings was originally the F5 progeny of a single F4 plant derived from the cross A00-711063 x SD98-595. The cross was made in the summer of 2001, and the progeny was advanced to F4 generation by single pod descent during the winter of 2001 through the summer of 2004. In 2005, F5 progeny rows were planted and 26 rows/lines were selected. Subsequently, yield tests were performed in multiple locations. SD05-240, one of these lines, was further evaluated in the USDA Uniform Soybean Test ? Northern Region (2008-2010, F8-F10), and the South Dakota Crop Performance Test (2009-2011). Fifty phenotypically uniform rows were harvested to produce F9 breeders seed in 2009, and the seed was further increased in 2010. In 2011, F11 foundation seed was produced by SD Foundation Seeds Stock Division. SD05-240 was named Brookings and approved for official release by the SDSU Variety/Germplasm Release Committee in February 2012. This cultivar is conventional (non-GMO), MG I (relative maturity 1.7), high yield, good quality, and Phytophthora rot-resistant. The yield over multiple years and multiple locations averaged 58-63 bu/a, 7.2% higher than Deuel, and 8.6% higher than MN 1410 in SD CPT trials. The protein and oil content at 13 moisture averaged 34.3-37.7% and 18.2-18.3%, respectively. It possesses resistance gene Rps 1k to Phytophthora root rot. Maturity: 123-136 days after planting; plant height: 33 inches; lodging score: 1.5-2.5; and seed quality: 1.2.
