Snowdon white kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) developed by Michigan State University AgBioResearch was released in 2012 as a new edible dry bean cultivar. Snowdon was developed using pedigree selection to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease, agronomic and quality traits. Snowdon is a determinate bush plant that combines high yield with early-mid season maturity with disease resistance and acceptable canning quality. In 4-yr of field trials, Snowdon yielded (3159 kg ha-1), and data was recorded for plant height (51 cm), lodging resistance (1.4) and seed size (65.2 g 100 seed-1). Snowdon is most similar to `Beluga? white kidney cultivar. Both cultivars are resistant to bean common mosaic virus and anthracnose race 73. Both cultivars possess the same bush type-1 determinate growth habit. Snowdon has a white flower and flowers in 36 d and matures in 94 d, 6-days earlier than Beluga. Snowdon has acceptable canning quality equivalent to Beluga.

Description:
Snowdon white kidney bean variety was developed from the cross made in 2005 between two kidney bean breeding lines: K04604/USDK-CBB-15. MSU breeding line K04604, derived from cross of K99974 / California Early LRK, was a high yielding white kidney line with desirable agronomic traits but lacked acceptable canning quality; and dark red kidney breeding line USDK-CBB-15 was released by USDA-ARS program in Washington. USDK-CBB-15 possessed resistance to common bacterial blight combined with the superior agronomic and canning quality characteristics of the dark red kidney bean class.
