Narrative
Eldorado pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), developed by Michigan State University AgBioResearch, and was released in 2012 as a new high-yielding edible dry bean cultivar suitable for direct harvest. Eldorado was developed using single seed descent to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease, agronomic and quality traits. Eldorado has an upright short vine habit that combines improved lodging resistance, full-season maturity with resistance to white mold and acceptable canning quality. In 4-yr of field trials, Eldorado yielded (3364 kg ha-1), and data was recorded for plant height (53 cm), lodging resistance (1.9) and seed size (42.9 g 100 seed-1). Eldorado is most similar to `La Paz? pinto cultivar. Both cultivars are resistant to bean common mosaic virus, but Eldorado possesses higher levels of resistance to white mold. Over 4-yr. field testing Eldorado was rated 30% infection compared to 59% infection for La Paz. Both cultivars possess the same type-II indeterminate growth habit and are suited for direct harvest. Eldorado has a white flower and flowers in 42 d and matures in 98 d, 3-days later than La Paz. Eldorado has acceptable canning quality equivalent to La Paz.

Description:
Eldorado pinto bean variety was developed from the cross made in 2004 between two pinto bean breeding lines: AN-37/P02630; AN-37 was released by USDA-ARS program in Washington as pinto bean breeding line USPT-WM-1 with tolerance to white mold. It was derived from cross of `Aztec? pinto cultivar with NDSU navy bean breeding line ND88-106-04 that derived tolerance to white mold from `Bunsi? navy bean cultivar. MSU breeding line P02630 was a mid-season, upright pinto line with good canning quality, but it lacked adequate levels of resistance to white mold.
