Narrative
'Carolina Cayenne' exhibits much less variability for horticultural traits than 'Carolina Hot'. The plants are strong and uniformly branched, and reach a height of about 60 cm. 'Carolina Cayenne' has a distinctly different fruit type than that described for the original 'Carolina Hot'. 'Carolina Cayenne' fruits are shorter, thicker, and straighter than 'Carolina Hot' fruits, and tend to taper to a round rather than a sharp point. A typical 'Carolina Cayenne' fruit is straight to slightly curved, 0.64 cm in diameter at the base, and 10 cm in length. It weighs 8.5 g (1.8 g dry). The mature fruits exhibit a bright-red color and are quite pungent (105,000 Scoville heat units). The calyx separates quite easily from the mature fruit. 'Carolina Cayenne' has exhibited a high level of resistance to southern root knot nematodes in all greenhouse and field tests; the numbers of galls and egg masses on the roots have always been minimal.

Description:
'Carolina Cayenne' is a composite of five S3 progeny populations derived from single southern root-knot nematode [Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood] resistant plants that were selected from a 160-plant 'Carolina Hot' population. The populations selected for the composite were homozygous for root-knot nematode resistance, quite similar in appearance, and did not exhibit any obvious segregation for horticultural traits. The original 'Carolina Hot' population exhibited a variable reaction to M. incognita; the results of field trials indicated that this parasite can reduce the marketable fruit yield of susceptible 'Carolina Hot' plants by as much as 87.5%
