Haywood County, North Carolina, United States
Locality: Harmon Den area, along Pisgah National Forest Rd 288 (Buzzard Roost Rd), near Exit 7 of I-40, approx. 0.2 mi south of crossing of Pigeon River, on E side of road.
Habitat: Wild Habitat
Number of plants sampled: 1
Comment: Fruit collected from single individual growing within a population of Magnolia tripetala. Seed collected from this tree in the past has yielded natural hybrids of M. fraseri x M. tripetala, identified in the seedling stage by an absence of auriculate leaf bases. These seedlings were grown to maturity and reflect intermediate morphology in all aspects, but flowering display is superior to either parent; apparently a sterile hybrid, as no sound seed have been formed by the hybrids. It is suggested that the seed from this M. fraseri be grown separately to screen for possible hybrids.
