'NC-Burton' soybean was cooperatively developed and released by North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, and it was first tested in North Carolina yield trials in 2003. NC-Burton is a determinate, maturity-group-V, high-yielding, conventional cultivar adapted to the northern and central regions of eastern North Carolina. It was derived from the cross of the high-yielding line TN93-99 and the soybean cyst nematode-resistant cultivar 'Fowler'. In the NCSU breeding yield trials (11 environments), NC-Burton averaged 3466 kg ha -1, or 441 kg ha -1more than the check cultivar '56011' under full-season conditions. In eight average-to high-yield environments in the North Carolina Official Variety Trials, NC-Burton had a significantly higher seed yield (4091 kg ha -1) than 560H in narrow (19-cm) row spacing. Seed protein content was lower but the oil content was similar to that of 560H. NC-Burton is resistant to stem canker (caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum var. meridional is), frogeye leaf spot (caused by Cercospora sojina Hara), and bacterial pustule [caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines (Nakano) Dye]. The maturity of NC-Burton was similar to '56011' (Pantalone et aI., 2003b) and 7.2 d later than '50021' (Pantalone et aI., 2004) in the NCSU breeding trials in eastern North Carolina (Table 1). In the Uniform Soybean Tests Southern States, the maturity of NC-Burton and 560H were also similar and 5-7 d later than 5002T (Table 2). NC-Burton has shiny yellow seeds with black hila. Plants have green cotyledons, a green hypocotyl, a determinate growth habit, oval medium-green leaves, white flowers, tawny pubescence, and a tan pod wall. In Uniform Soybean Tests Southern States (Gillen and Shelton, 2006), NC-Burton had a similar lodging score (1.3-1.4) as 5601 T and 5002T (1-5 scale where 1 =all plants erect, and 5 = all plants prostrate; Table 2). NC-Burton (62-69 cm) was shorter than 560H (77-82 cm).
