Description:
The breeding line US-427 is a root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) resistant, brown crowder type southernpea***. US-427 is the product of a conventional recurrent backcross breeding procedure to transfer the dominant Rk gene for root-knot nematode resistance [M. incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood), M. javanica (Treub.) Chitwood, and M. hapla Chitwood] from the commercial cultivar Mississippi Silver into the popular home garden cultivar Knuckle Purple Hull; it is a composite of four homozygous resistant (Rk/Rk) F4 selections derived from the 5th backcross. US-427 is near cultivar quality, and it is recommended for use as parental material in breeding programs. ***The southernpea is a horticultural-type of cowpea developed to be grown as a vegetable crop
