Description:
Efforts to develop 'KnuckleHull-VNR' were initiated with the evaluation of a collection of 61 knuckle purple hull-type breeding lines. Exact pedigrees are unknown, but each line was believed to be the result of a cross between the root-knot nematode-resistant US-427 and a Blackeye cowpea mosaic virus-resistant breeding line. The 61 lines were evaluated in a 1997 field planting and subjected to a selection effort to develop homozygous, knuckle purple hull-type populations. Progenies of single plants selected from the 1997 field planting were grown in a winter 1997/1998 greenhouse planting and an additional cycle of selection was completed. 'KnuckleHull-VNR' originated as the bulk of the progeny of one of the winter 1997/1998 single-plant selections grown in a spring 1998 greenhouse planting
