Description:
'Carolina Crowder' was developed over 20 years using a backcross-pedigree breeding procedure that included three hybridizations and repeated single-plant selections. The initial cross involved Ala. 963.8 and 'Floricream'. Single plant selection was practiced through the F5 generation, when the cowpea curculio (Chalcodermus aeneus Boehman) resistant breeding line CR-17-1-13 was selected. CR-17-1-13 was then crossed with 'Mississippi Silver', and the F1 was subsequently backcrossed to the 'Mississippi Silver' parent. Following the last hybridization, intense selection pressure was applied in the F2 through F7 generations for cowpea curculio resistance and superior horticultural characteristics. 'Carolina Crowder' originated as a bulk of an F7 population grown in 1984
