Narrative
TARS-MST1 showed significantly higher seed yield than a susceptible check and a local control under high temperature stress in a field trial, and in a combined analysis of yield under drought and non-stress conditions, conducted in Nebraska and Puerto Rico, the geometric mean was similar to the drought tolerant control genotypes. TARS-MST1 showed moderate resistance to Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 in the greenhouse, moderate root rot resistance in a multiply-stressed root rot field nursery, and tolerance to M. phaseolina in an inoculated field trial. TARS-MST1 showed resistance to multiple strains of common bacterial blight, and a hypersensitive response to the NL3 strain of BCMNV (Bean Common Mosaic Necrosis Virus), indicating the presence of the I gene. The presence of the I gene was confirmed with the SW13 SCAR marker, and of CBB resistance with SCAR markers SU91 and SAP6. In the combined analysis, TARS-MST1 flowered in 41 days and matured in 79 to 81 days. The 100 seed weight was 21.7 g. The color and seed size of the line is satisfactory.

Description:
TARS-MST1 (tested as breeding line 01059-791), was developed from the single cross `Tacana? / VAX 6. Tacana is a high-yielding black bean cultivar developed in Mexico (Lopez-Salinas et al., 1997) with tolerance to Macrophomina phaseolina (causes ashy stem blight) and drought, and with high yield potential. VAX 6 is a small red bean germplasm line developed at CIAT (Singh and Mu?oz, 1999) with Phaseolus acutifolius-derived common bacterial blight resistance, and moderate heat tolerance.
