Narrative
This accession was apparently collected in SE Asia by
Rainer Scora
, now Professor Emeritus.
A complete list of the seeds collected
(written in the hand of Founding NCGRCD Director
Tim Williams
) shows a total of 14 collections. However, since at least the time I arrived at the Repository (1994), there were apparently only two groups still in existence (based upon morphology): a citron (or citron hybrid) and a small-fruited lime. However, there were four binomials applied to these: C medica, C aurantiifolia, C alata, and C amblycarpa. Most of the apparent citron trees (ivno 1084, 1085, 1086, 1087, 1123, 1124, 1240, 1241, 1261, 1278) were labelled "#10 winged" which was consistent with Rainer's list. One tree that was labelled C amblycarpa (ivno 1080) was also clearly a citron. The remainder of the trees, which were all apparently small-fruited limes, were labeled C aurantiifolia (ivno 1081, 1082), C alata (ivno 1260, 1288, 1289), and C amblycarpa (ivno 1078, 1079). Both the citrons and the limes are polyembryonic (based upon observations of seed germination). After some initial culling of the citrons, seven of them were analyzed using SSR markers. All except one (ivno 1085) were apparently identical. Therefore ivno 1085 was retained as a zygotic seedling along with two apparent nucellar seedlings (ivno 1124, 1240) as
RSD 1986001
. These two genotypes will be separated at a later date. The apparent limes were all identical with each other and with a standard Mexican-type lime
PI 539151
except for two trees (ivno 1078, 1079) that were actually labelled C amblycarpa. Since the actual source of the limes was unknown and they were apparently identical to the standard accession, all were disposed except for ivno 1078 and 1079, which were retained as
RSD 1986002
. These two trees were identical to each other and differed from the others at 3 loci. Note that it is possible that the limes were propagated from existing accessions by accident, considering the various problems with the identification of the trees. As can be seen from the list, Rainer did collect a C amblycarpa but this is so distinct from C aurantifolia that he would not habe mistaken its identity. The list does not include C alata (which is supposed to be a winged citron, this name might have been applied by Tim), The list does include two collections of C aurantiifolia. Rainer's #6 is documented as "winged - collected Prachinburi, SE Thailand" whereas his #13 is documented as "winged Is 26 collected Padang Datar, Tanjung Mas, S Sumatra." Note that one disposed tree (ivno 1082) was labelled as "#6 winged"; however, this was one of the identical seedlings that were disposed. Since the two retained limes were mislabelled, it is possible that they represent that collection. However, all we can really say about these is that they are limes that might have been collected in SE Asia. Whew! (RR Krueger, 09/26/2010)
