Narrative
Nucellar selection of
RSD 1997013
. Of 20 seeds of RSD 1997013 collected, 10 germinatead and 1 was retained as RRUT 91. The remainder of the seeds of RSD 1997013 were discarded and RSD 1997013 was inactivated. Given that Rio Farms is a former USDA collection, this might be C-66-2 (Indio)/USDA-66-44/IF-66-75. Origin apparently Szechuan, China, via J Hearn, via Chapot, via Childs. AKA 'kin tch'eng', 'e tan kan' (='goose egg kan'). Midseason, few seeds. Information from Indio Accession Book. Citrus Industry, vol I, p 521 indicates that this variety originated in SE China and spread long ago to Formosa and Japan, where its culture is confined to the hotter portions of the Kagoshima Prefecture; tree characteristics are typically mandarin, but certain fruit characteristics suggest that it may be a natural tangor. There are already two active accessions of 'Tankan' (
PI 539239
and
PI 539245M/a>, so this one should be compared and evaluated as to whether it is retained or not. (RR Krueger, 09/14/2010)
