Narrative
Exotica Nursery in Vista, California, was visited with
David Karp
and
Steve Facciola
on 08/19/2010. The owner, Steve Spangler, has two types of Curry leaf. This accession represents what he refers to as the "large leaved" type. See source information for origin. This accession produces seed, although it is sometimes propagated by air layering. The other type, which he referred to as the "small leaved" type, had a different origin. Exotica has (or has had) two different types of small-leaved Curry leaf. One type was obtained from seeds collected from the Wahiawa station in Hawaii, not too far from Dole pineapple planting. However, it is possible that all these plants had been sold. The other source of small-leaved Curry leaf was California Tropical Fruit Tree Nursery, Vista, California (Perry Coles). Air layers from this source produced the large tree planted in the ground that was observed on the visit. Mr Spangler stated that the small-leaved type had a more pungent aroma than the large-leaved type and that the local population of sub-continental heritage prefer the small-leaved type. He typically sells several hundred Curry leaf plants each year. Most of these are the large-leaved type, since the small-leaved type typically does not flower or fruit and so is propagated almost exclusively by air layering, which has a lower success rate. Mr Spangler stated that the large-leaved type typically achieves about 80 % germination. The current Repository accession of Curry leaf,
PI 539745
, appears to be closer in appearance to the small-leaved type at Exotica, thus RSD 2010003 may represent a new genotype or variety. Information synthesized from visit and follow-up telephone call to D Karp on 08/28/2010. (RR Krueger, 08/20/2010)
