Narrative
Produced a five-year mean seed yield of 2392 kg ha-1 in the performance trials conducted at Isabela, Puerto Rico. Has an indeterminate, bush, Type II growth habit. Flowers 33 d and matures 77 d after planting. Has a kidney shaped seed with a mean seed weight of 42 g 100 seed-1. Has a light red seed coat color that is commercially acceptable in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean countries. Had a lethal hypersensitive reaction to inoculation with BCMNV strain NL3, suggesting that it carries the dominant allele at the I gene. The presence of this allele was confirmed using the SW13 SCAR marker. Carries the SAP6 SCAR marker, but not the SU91 SCAR marker for resistance to common bacterial blight (CBB) caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis vp. phaseoli. When inoculated with CBB strain 3353, showed resistance levels equal to or less than VAX 6, a germplasm line used as a resistant CBB control, for leaf score and equal resistance to VAX6 for pod score. When inoculated with CBB strain 484a, had a mean leaf score similar to the resistant cultivar VAX6 and was more resistant than the susceptible check Morales. In field trials conducted at Isabela, Puerto Rico, Badillo did not develop CBB symptoms on pods or leaves and had superior CBB resistance compared to other red kidney cultivars. Did not show evidence of susceptibility to endemic races of common bean rust caused by Uromyces appendiculatus, suggesting that it has resistance to this pathogen.

AFR 285/PR9443-4. AFR 285 is a light red kidney bean breeding line from CIAT selected in Puerto Rico for local adaptation and commercial seed type. AFR 285 derived from the cross G 6415 / XAN 43. PR9443-4 is a light red kidney bean breeding line with resistance to Bean golden yellow mosaic virus (BGYMV), BCMV (I gene), rust and common bacterial blight. PR9443-4 was derived from the cross T969-2/DOR 303.
