Narrative
Disease resistant rice has improved resistance to sheath blight and good agronomic characteristics. Crosses between sheath blight resistant sources and adapted southern U.S. varieties were made. Panicle rows wereplanted in the field and inoculated for sheath blight. Selections for sheath blight resistance, uniform adapted plant type, and early maturity were repeated over years. Seed was increased and yield trials were conducted. Additional crosses between resistant lines and adapted varieties were made and reselected for sheath blight resistance and plant type. Plant height was 0.88 m compared to 0.88 m for Cocodrie and 0.94 m for CL151. Days from planting to 50% heading was 84 compared to 80 for Cocodrie and 83 for CL151. Four average sheath blight rating was 4.5 on a 0-9 rating scale where 0 indicates immunity and 9 indicates very susceptible after inoculation with the sheath blight fungus, indicating moderate resistance to resistance to sheath blight compared to 8.3 and 7.3 ratings for the very susceptible cultivars Cocodrie and CL151, respectively.
