Narrative
Progeny evaluation and selection was conducted at two locations with two replicates each at Stoneville, MS in 2006. Selected progeny lines were further tested in replicated trials at Stoneville, MS and Florence, SC in 2007 and 2008. Averaged over locations and years, lint yields of JC14, JC32, JC60 and JC65 were 881, 1161, 833 and 1190 kg ha-1, respectively, comparing to check cultivar PHY72 (1090 kg ha-1). Lint percent was 39.3 and 40.4 % for JC32 and JC65, respectively, similar or significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of PHY72 (39.5%) while seed weight was 121 and 119 mg for JC32 and JC65, respectively, significantly (p<0.05) higher than the seed weight of PHY72 (105 mg). Fiber bundle strength (252 kN m kg-1) and 50% span length (15.1 mm) of JC65 were similar to those of PHY72 while other fiber properties such as elongation (8.1%), short fiber content (3.5%), and fineness (174 mg km-1) were superior to those of PHY72. Micronaire (4.5), elongation (8.2%), short fiber content (3.5%), and fineness (174 mg km-1) of JC32 were also superior to those PHY72. Fiber properties of JC14 and JC were exceptional with bundle strengths of 277 and 281 kN m kg-1, 50% span lengths of 15.4 and 15.7 mm, short fiber contents of 3.9 and 3.2%, and fineness of 167 and 165 mg km-1, respectively. The desirable combinations of these fiber properties in these two lines were considered unique. Leaf areas of the fourth fully extended leaf from top of plant of these four JC lines ranged from 80 to 90 cm2. Plant heights ranged from 102 to 111 cm. Days from planting to the first opening boll in the four JC lines averaged 121 d. Size of nectarines was 3 to 4 mm for the four lines. Nearly smooth leaf was observed for JC32 while intermediate pubescence was observed for the rest lines. The color of flowers and fibers of the four JC lines are white.

JC14, JC32, JC60 and JC65 were developed by crossing Acala 1517 type cultivars of G. hirsutum with G. barbadense. Crosses were made at Las Cruces, NM by open pollination among parents for multiple generations. Open pollinations were allowed among parents and hybrid progenies during introgression between early 1970s and 1990s. The population was advanced at Stoneville, MS
