Narrative
Plants ~20 cm tall. Red stems, birdsnest maturing umbels, ~6 cm wide. Note from curator: Daucus carota accessions Ames 30261 and Ames 30304 were collected each as a single umbel from specimens exhibiting unique plant/seed characteristics found at the same coordinates in Tunisia 17 August 2009. After regeneration, it is believed these accessions are from a segregating population at that location. Ames 30261 original seed sample appears like typical wild D. carota, Ames 30304 original seed sample has toothed ridges instead of typical spined ridges and was tentatively identified as unidentified Apiaciae. Ames 30261 was confirmed as D. carota in 2013. Ames 30304 was reidentified to D. carota in 2021. Based on the different plant/seed characteristics, these accessions will be maintained as separate accession numbers until further molecular and characterization evaluation can be done.

Observation Data Added:
An unusual accession that arrived as a taxonomically unidentified Apiaceae was re-identified to Daucus carota, carrot. This accession (Ames 30304, Tun312) was collected by expert Daucus collectors in Tunisia in 2009 as one plant (since only one umbel arrived in the original packet). These collectors were confused by the seeds which lack the bristles of typical Daucus, so they collected it as unidentified Apiaceae. In 2021 when the plants were growing, the taxonomy was corrected. The accession is non-uniform and it especially segregates for seed types, bristled and non-bristled. The non-bristled trait is potentially useful in improving cultivars since non-bristled seeds would flow better in planting or seed cleaning. Unfortunately, flowering is un-synchronized causing many small and delayed harvests, so the last harvest will be in 2022. 24 Feb 2022.
