Narrative
NUA35 and NUA56 are high seed mineral, red mottled common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) developed by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Cali, Colombia. Both lines are bush beans with NUA35 being determinate (type I growth habit) and NUA56 being indeterminate (type II growth habit). Seed color for both genotypes is red mottled and seed size is large (above 40g/100 seed weight). NUA35 and NUA56 are tolerant to angular leaf spot (ALS [caused by the pathogen Phaeoisariopsis griseola (Sacc.)] ) in Colombia (but are susceptible to rust (caused by the pathogen Uromyces appendicultus (Pers.) Unger var. appendiculatus) in Bolivia. NUA35 and NUA56 flower at 33 and 40 days after planting (DAP) in Dari n and mature at approximately 75 and 83 DAP in the same site. At various sites in Latin America, NUA56 had higher average seed iron content (81 ppm) than NUA35 (76 ppm); while the opposite was true for average seed zinc content where NUA35 had 34 ppm and NUA56 had 33 ppm. The iron differential of the two germplasm lines compared to the recurrent parent CAL96 was usually 15 to 20 ppm with up to 25 ppm difference for NUA35 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and 37 ppm for NUA56.
