Narrative
Upright, midseason, disease-resistant cultivar. Combines high yield potential with erect architecture and is among the highest yielding contemporary black and navy bean cultivars. Yielded 3109 kg ha-1 over 35 locations in 4 years of testing (2004-08) and yield ranged from a high of 4973 kg ha-1 to a low of 1938 kg ha-1. Exhibits the type-II upright short vine (indeterminate) growth habit combined with resistance to lodging (1.8). Plants average 51 cm in height, are more upright than Condor, and exhibit an overall upright appearance similar to Jaguar. Has purple flowers and flower at 48 d. Mid-full season bean maturing 95 d after planting. Has excellent resistance to lodging making it suitable for direct harvest under narrow production systems. Upright architecture also contributes to avoidance to white mold, a disease aggravated by narrow rows. Possesses the single dominant hypersensitive I gene which conditions resistance to seed-borne Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV). Possesses partial resistance to common bacterial blight and resistance to specific races of rust, virus, anthracnose and root rot pathogens. Has small opaque dry bean seed typical of black bean seed class averaging 21 g 100-seed-1 and size ranges from 19-24 g 100-seed-1. Seed size and shape meets the standards of national and international markets. Canning quality is equivalent to other black bean cultivars as it retains more black color following processing.
