Narrative
Exposed portions of CPCL 97-2730 stalks were green-yellow (2.5 GY 8/8) or had a moderate yellow (5 Y 6/2) wax bloom. Where covered by the leaf sheath, portions of the stalk had a black wax bloom; otherwise stalk color under the leaf sheath was green-yellow (2.5 GY 6/6). There were no growth cracks on CPCL 97-2730 and CP 72-2086 stalks, but CP 89-2143 stalks had moderately deep, but sparse growth cracks. Stalk height of CPCL 97-2730 measured from the ground to the top visible dewlap was 230 cm. Mean internode length of CPCL 97-2730 at the middle of the stalk was 19.2 cm and its shape was cylindrical. The root band of CPCL 97-2730 was 7.9 mm wide and had primordia with diameters ranging from 1.9 to 2.6 mm. When present, bud furrows on stalks of CPCL 97-2730 extended about half the length of the internode. The buds of CPCL 97-2730 were yellow (5 Y 8/4) and their shapes were round with central germ pore. The canopy of CPCL 97-2730 was curved. The mean leaf blade length and width of CPCL 97-2730 at the top visible dewlap were 147 and 3.9 cm, respectively. Green yellow (5 GY7/2) leaf sheaths were mostly smooth but had heavy pubescence in their central regions. The dewlaps on the upper leaves of mature plants were green-yellow (2.5 GY 8/4) and their shapes were squarish subcrescent. CPCL 97-2730 had auricles only on one side of the leaf sheath; the mean auricle length was 23 mm and auricle shape was long lanceolate. The ligules of CPCL 97-2730 exhibited a linear crescent shape. CPCL 97-2730 has shown adequate resistance for commercial production in Florida to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Sydow), orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), leaf scald [caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson], Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), ratoon stunting disease (RSD) (caused by Clavibacter xyli subsp. Xyli Davis) in Florida, and smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow and P. Sydow).

CPCL 97-2730 sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was selected from a cross of CL 75-0853 X CL 98-4730 made at Clewiston, FL in Dec. 1996. Male grandparents were CL 75-0335 and CP 70-1133; female grandparents were CL 68-1336 and CL 54-378. Great grandparents were CL 41-0142, CL 47-0083, CL 61-0355, CP 56-063, and F 36-0819. Great-great grandparents were B 35-0009, CL 41-0223 (twice), CL 47-083, CL 49-0200, CL 54-0205, CP 27-0108, CP 36-105, F 31-962, POJ 2878.
