Narrative
The covered portions of CP 01-1372 stalks had a black wax layer. Beneath the wax layer, covered stalk portions, exposed wax layers, and exposed stalk portions of CP 01-1372 had shades of green-yellow (2.5 GY 8/8), and (2.5 GY 6/4), respectively. Stalk height of CP 01-1372 measured from the ground to the top visible dewlap, was 254 cm. Mean internode length of CP 01-1372 at the middle of the stalk was 14.7 cm and its shape was concave-convex. The root band of CP 01-1372 was 6.6 mm wide and exhibited a light wax layer. Bud furrows were occasional and shallow on CP 01-1372 internodes. The buds of CP 01-1372 were green yellow (2.5 GY 8/6 and 2.5 GY 8/4) and their shapes were ovate with emarginated basal wing region or squarish pentagonal with wing inserted high. The canopy of CP 01-1372 was open and leaf shape was ascending and erect with drooping tip. The mean leaf blade length and width of CP 01-1372 at the top visible dewlap were 134.3 and 4.5 cm, respectively. Green yellow (5 GY 4/6) leaf sheaths were mostly smooth with light pubescence in their center portions. The dewlaps on the upper leaves of mature plants were red (10 R 4/2) and their shapes were deltoid to squarish deltoid. The auricles on stalks of CP 01-1372 were short lanceolate on one side (12.4 mm) and long lanceolate (61.0 mm) on the opposite side. The greenish-yellow (2.5 GY 8/8) ligules of CP 01-1372 exhibited a crescent with lozenge shape. CP 01-1372 has shown adequate resistance for commercial production in Florida to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Sydow), orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), leaf scald [caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson], Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), and ratoon stunting disease (RSD) (caused by Clavibacter xyli subsp. Xyli Davis) in Florida. CP 01-1372 was moderately susceptible to smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow and P. Sydow).

CP 01-1372 sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was selected from a cross of CP 94-1200 X CP 89-2143 made at Canal Point, FL in Dec. 1998. Grandparents (male side) were CP 81-1254 and CP 72-2086; and (female side) were CP 93-1969 and CP 80-1743. Great grandparents were CP 62-374, CP 63-588, CP 68-1067, CP 72-1210, and CP 72-2083. Great-great grandparents were CL 54-1910, CP 33-224, CP 53-018, CP 56-063, CP 57-120, CP 57-603, CP 62-374, CP 63-588, and CP 65-0357.
