Narrative
VCW 54 (4.6) and VCW 55 (6.0) had significantly (P<0.05) lower mean white mold scores than ICA Pijao (6.9) and partially resistant ICA Bunsi (6.6) and susceptible Othello (8.4) checks when evaluated on a 1 to 9 scale, where 1= no white mold disease symptoms and 9= severely diseased or dead plants in the greenhouse tests at University of Colorado, Fort Collins, Colorado and University of Idaho, Kimberly, Idaho in 2008. VCW 54 exhibited the highest level of white mold resistance than all other genotypes reported previously. VCW 54 had light scarlet flower color with purplish black seed. The standard of VCW 55 flower was white with light pink stripe and seed was black. VCW 54 and VCW 55 were late maturing (~100 d) and had small seed (>25 g 100 seed weight-1) and an upright growth habit Type II, similar to ICA Pijao. Often late maturity combined with upright growth habit and resistance to lodging (associated with stay-green stem characteristic) seem to be associated with field avoidance of WM. From examining the white mold reaction of VCW 54 and VCW 55 in the greenhouse and field in 2007 under extremely severe disease pressure, it is likely that, in addition to the physiological white mold resistance, the two interspecific germplasm lines may also possess some architectural avoidance traits to lower white mold scores in the field. While VCW 55 had no apparent fertility problems and behaved as a normal common bean, VCW 54 was partially sterile and hence seed set was sparse and delayed.

Description:
VCW 54 and VCW 55 were developed by congruity-backcrossing between dry bean �ICA Pijao� and the scarlet runner bean G 35172 (ICA Pijao/G 35172//ICA Pijao/3/G 35172). Single plant was harvested from F1 to F7. No selection for white mold resistance or any other trait was practiced from F1 to F7. The screening for white mold was carried out in the greenhouse at the Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado from 2002 to 2008 and at University of Idaho (UI), Kimberly Research & Extension Center from 2004 to 2008, and in the field at UI-Parma Research & Extension Center from 2004 to 2007.
