Environment description: Eroding (burnt orange) sandstone cliff, south side of Iowa River; mostly shaded; near base of slope with northern aspect; sand and organic matter above cliff; well drained.
Number of plants sampled: 13
Associated species: Diervilla lonicera, Fraxinus, Lonicera dioica, Ostrya virginiana, Quercus rubra, Sambucus canadensis, Smilacina racemosa, Tilia, and Urtica dioica.
Comment: Some fruits still green at time of collection, majority of fruits were starting to ripen. Variation among plants in fruit ripening phenology. Balanced sample collected from 13 specimens.

A total of 330 species were recorded from the area. The presence of Pinus strobus, Betula papyrifera, Betula alleghaniensis represent disjunct populations and are considered viable members of the woodland community. Principal natural features include sheer sandstone cliffs, with abundant talus at the base. Montieth sandy loam (14-40 slope) makes up most of the preserve. To provide a status update on the yellow birch, specimens located from their southern most occurrence to the ravine just beyond the sheer cliffs were measured. A total of 78 specimens were measured (2009) averaging 12.5" d.b.h. The largest specimen measured was 24.5" d.b.h. Number of accessions cited: 4
